Happy Backyards: the swing set store on the North / East cover

Two friends from St. Louis started selling wooden swing sets around Nashville in 1996. Thirty years on, the store sells trampolines, hoops and court surfaces as well, and installs what it sells.

Two friends from St. Louis, and a market about to boom

The About page tells the start in a few lines. Two childhood friends who grew up in St. Louis moved to Nashville after college and began selling wooden residential swing sets in Middle Tennessee in 1996, when, in the page’s words, the large wooden swing set market “was just starting to boom.” It doesn’t name them. It says both raised their families here, and that the two owners and a sales manager have more than 65 years in the business between them (Happy Backyards, About). The Better Business Bureau lists Happy Backyards at 1800 Galleria Blvd in Franklin, rated A+; its file there was opened on March 18, 2011, and the store is not BBB accredited (Better Business Bureau, Happy Backyards).

Four things it sells, and who makes them

  • Playsets: Playground One, a wooden line launched in 2011 that the store says it buys direct, in large volumes (Happy Backyards, About). Every set is redwood or cedar, which the FAQ prefers to chemically treated lumber because both woods resist rot and insects (Happy Backyards, FAQs).
  • Trampolines: AlleyOop and Springfree (Happy Backyards, About).
  • Basketball goals: in-ground Proformance Hoops and Goalrilla, each anchored four feet deep in concrete (Happy Backyards, About, Happy Backyards, FAQs).
  • Courts and bigger jobs: SnapSports flooring, indoors or out, for basketball, pickleball, tennis or volleyball, and commercial playgrounds for HOAs, churches and private schools (Happy Backyards, About).

The showroom is part indoor, part outdoor, and the location page asks parents to bring the children along so they can give the equipment a “test drive” while the grown-ups talk it over (Happy Backyards, Location).

From the order to the first swing

The FAQ gives the timing plainly. Most playsets go in three to five weeks after the order, or one to two weeks if the set is in stock. A basketball goal takes steps: the utility companies mark the yard within three business days, the anchor is set in concrete one to three days later, and the pole and backboard go up one to three days after the concrete cures, about seven to ten days in all for a goal in stock. The same page says installs are running two to four weeks right now, depending on the product (Happy Backyards, FAQs).

Some of the work is the homeowner’s. The policies page asks you to call 811, Tennessee’s one-call line, to have utilities marked, and to show the installer where any irrigation lines run, since 811 doesn’t mark those; rock that needs a jackhammer adds to the bill. If the installer arrives and the set won’t fit for size or slope, the store refunds the purchase in full (Happy Backyards, Policies). On slopes, the FAQ says every set adjusts for some, and none needs staking. A set can move with the family, too, and the store will move it for a fee (Happy Backyards, FAQs).

How far the crews go

Installation is included within 30 miles of the store’s two locations: Franklin, and a second showroom at 468 US-72 in Collierville, outside Memphis. Past that line the policies page charges by the mile each way, and a basketball goal means two trips because it goes in over two days (Happy Backyards, Policies). The site names no North / East towns, so from Hendersonville, Mt. Juliet or Murfreesboro, ask for the mileage with the quote.

Warranties go to the maker

The store publishes no warranty of its own. Its policies page sends each product to its manufacturer’s registration, from Playground One to Springfree and Proformance, ships replacements for defective parts at no charge, and offers no refunds once a set is installed (Happy Backyards, Policies). So the questions belong before the order: which maker’s warranty covers the set or goal you’re buying, for how long, and who registers it.

Q & A

About Happy Backyards

Parents’ questions before buying a playset or a hoop, answered from the store’s FAQ, policies and About page.

Where is the Happy Backyards showroom?

In the Galleria mall in Cool Springs: 1800 Galleria Blvd, Suite 1015, Franklin, open Monday to Saturday from 10 to 5 and closed Sundays. The showroom is indoors and out, and children are invited to try the equipment. A second store is in Collierville, near Memphis.

How long does it take Happy Backyards to install a swing set?

Its FAQ puts most playsets at three to five weeks from the order, or one to two weeks when the set is in stock, and says installs are running two to four weeks right now, depending on the product. A basketball goal in stock is usually playable seven to ten days after the sale.

Does Happy Backyards install in Hendersonville, Mt. Juliet or Murfreesboro?

Installation is included within 30 miles of its stores in Franklin and Collierville; beyond that, the policies page adds a charge per mile each way. Its pages name no North / East towns, so give the store your address and ask what the mileage comes to.

What are Happy Backyards playsets made of?

Redwood and cedar, by its FAQ, which it prefers to chemically treated lumber for resistance to rot and insects. Its playset line is Playground One. None of the sets needs staking, and all are built to adjust for some slope in the yard.

Can I take a playset or basketball goal with me when I move?

Yes, by the company’s FAQ. A playset can go with you, and the store offers to move it for an added fee. An in-ground goal comes off its anchor system and goes up again at the new house on a new anchor, set four feet deep in concrete like the first.

How long has Happy Backyards been in business?

Since 1996, when its two founders began selling wooden swing sets in Middle Tennessee, by its About page. The Better Business Bureau opened its file in 2011, rates it A+, and shows it as not accredited.
